Social Media: Finding the Best Content Mix for Your Brand

A strong social media presence is essential. It increases your organization’s brand visibility, builds relationships and reputation, drives digital traffic and ultimately achieves organizational objectives. Whether your social media program is in its infancy or well-established, the key is formulating and following a content mix that aligns with strategic goals. How do you get it right? It’s all about creating a social strategy that fits your audience’s interests, speaks to their needs and keeps them coming back for more.

Understanding the Content Mix

A content mix, or content ratio, is the balance between different types of content posted and shared on social media. Think of it like a recipe—the right blend of posts to keep your audience engaged without bombarding them with sales pitches.

A popular approach to this is the Jab, Jab, Right Hook method, coined by Gary Vaynerchuk. The idea is to deliver value to your audience through a series of “jabs” (engaging, entertaining or educational content) and then, when the time is right, throw the “right hook” (a call-to-action or promotional post) to encourage conversions.

Here are some popular content strategies to help you find the right “ingredients”:

Best Practices for Small Businesses

When you’re running a small business, every post counts. It’s important to create content that maximizes engagement without stretching your budget. Here’s how to make it work:

1. Prioritize Value-Driven Content

Growing your audience organically means sharing content that educates, entertains and builds trust. Focus on blog posts, industry insights, customer testimonials and how-to guides that provide value.

2. Engage with Your Community

A strong local or niche presence can set you apart. Respond to comments, ask questions, run polls, and highlight user-generated content to build connections and keep your audience involved.

3. Use Budget-Friendly Visuals

You don’t need a huge budget for great visuals. Tools like Canva, stock photos, and simple behind-the-scenes images and videos can help keep your content polished and engaging without breaking the bank.

4. Experiment with Different Formats

Try out various content types—Instagram Reels, Stories, carousels, or short-form videos as seen on TikTok—and pay attention to what clicks with your audience. Keep an eye on engagement metrics and tweak your strategy based on what performs best.

Best Practices for Large Businesses

Bigger businesses may have more resources, but staying authentic and personal can be a challenge. Here’s how to keep your content effective:

1. Tailor Content for Each Platform

With a diverse audience across multiple platforms, it’s important to customize your content. What works on LinkedIn might not resonate on Facebook, so adjust your messaging, tone and format to fit each platform’s style.

2. Use Data to Drive Your Strategy

Take advantage of advanced analytics and AI tools within the social platforms to track what’s working. Insights on posting times, audience behavior and content performance can help fine-tune your approach and maximize engagement.

3. Balance Brand Messaging with Audience Interests

Don’t let your content feel like one big sales pitch. Mix in brand storytelling, industry news, employee spotlights, and behind-the-scenes content to create a more relatable and familiar presence.

4. Be Strategic with Paid Promotions

Boosting your best-performing content with paid ads can expand your reach, but it’s important to align these promotions with what’s already resonating organically. This keeps your brand from feeling too sales-heavy while still being impactful.

Measuring the Success of Your Content Mix

No matter the size of your business, tracking social media analytics is crucial for driving growth and improving your strategy. Here are the top metrics to track your success:

1. Engagement Rate

Engagement rate is a metric that measures how actively your audience interacts with your content. It’s calculated as the percentage of people who engage (like, comment, share or save) compared to the total number of followers or impressions. A high engagement rate indicates that your content resonates with your audience, while a low rate suggests it may need adjustments.

2. Reach & Impressions

Reach and impressions are often confused, but they measure different things. Reach refers to the total number of unique users who have seen your content, while impressions count how many times your content has been displayed, including multiple views from the same user. If reach is low, your content may not be reaching enough people, while high impressions with low engagement could indicate that your content isn’t resonating.

3. Conversion Rates

Conversion rate is the percentage of users who take action after interacting with your content. This action could be making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or downloading a resource, depending on your business goals. A high conversion rate suggests your strategy is working well, while a low rate means there may be room for improvement in your messaging, offer or user experience.

4. Follower Growth

Follower growth refers to the increase in the number of people following your social media accounts over a specific period. To track this metric, compare the number of followers at the beginning and end of a specific time period, such as a month or quarter. An increase in followers indicates your brand is gaining more visibility and attracting new potential customers or stakeholders.

5. Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Click-Through Rate (CTR) is a metric that measures the percentage of people who click on a link, ad or call-to-action (CTA) in your content compared to the total number of people who saw the content. It’s a way to measure how effective your content is at encouraging action.

Finding the right content mix for your social media strategy is an ongoing process. By staying flexible, tracking your performance metrics, and prioritizing audience engagement, you can continually refine your approach for the best results.

Whether you’re a small business looking to grow your brand or a large company optimizing your digital presence, the right content mix is key to hitting your goals more effectively.

PRworks crafts customized social strategies that resonate and deliver real results. Let’s work together to craft and implement a content mix to see what clicks with your unique audience!

The Future of Search Optimization: SEO, AIO, GEO, AEO and SXO

In the early days of SEO, all it took to climb the SERP was a handful of high-ranking keywords and some backlinks.

Now, the search game has changed.

People are searching on TikTok, Reddit, YouTube, and even ChatGPT, not just Google. Your SEO strategy must consider discoverability across platforms.

Google is no longer the only gatekeeper. AI engines, answer tools and user experience (UX) are now just as critical to brand visibility. So, what does this mean for your brand?

We’re all about ensuring that content marketing, digital marketing and public relations are working in lockstep. The same approach applies to how your brand shows up in search engines. Today’s search environment requires a layered, interconnected approach that goes beyond traditional SEO. That’s where the new search stack comes into play.

SEO, AIO, GEO, AEO, and SXO

SEO: Search Engine Optimization
This is still a brand’s foundation for search. Keywords, backlinks, meta descriptions and technical structure help your site rank higher on Google. But they are only the first step.

AIO: AI Optimization
SEO is no longer just optimizing for indexing bots. It’s about appealing to language models. These models learn from structured, machine-readable content on platforms like GitHub, Wikidata, and Reddit. The question becomes: Will this content teach the model about my brand?

GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
Now that tools like ChatGPT and other AI assistants are delivering answers, your brand needs to be quotable. Structured, factual, and schema-rich content helps ensure AI recommends you in real time. If you don’t have schema implemented into your top pages, it’s time to make this a priority.

AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
Think featured snippets and voice search. These are the zero-click answers that show up instantly in the form of an AI overview when you search Google. Winning these boxes means answering questions directly, using schema, and optimizing for clarity.

SXO: Search Experience Optimization
This is where visibility meets performance. Once users land on your site, what happens next? A clean user experience, intent-matched messaging, and strategic calls to action are key to turning traffic into traction.

Many thought AI would be just a phase and something to keep an eye on. But AI is now embedded in search and it’s here to stay. It has become a search engine of its own.

Why the new SEO matters

If your digital strategy still relies solely on Google rankings, you’re missing half the puzzle. AI engines are looking for clarity, structure, and authority. Your content needs to not only rank, but also be understood, quoted, and trusted.

The brands winning in search in 2025 are following a new blueprint.

  • Search intent mapping: Align content with every stage of the user journey—awareness, evaluation, and decision
  • AI-readability: Use clean HTML, structured data, and clear entity relationships to ensure your content is machine-understandable
  • Educational value over volume: Don’t just publish more, publish better. Content should be reliable, informative, and genuinely useful
  • Brand-as-publisher mindset: Position your brand as a thought leader through expert content and commentary
  • User-experience first design: Even the best content fails if users bounce. Fast, intuitive, intent-aligned experiences are essential. Think concise, eye grabbing content that will keep the user wanting more on the page and implement a clean layout with fast load times and content that matches intent

Despite all the new layers, one thing hasn’t changed: Quality content is still what matters most. The difference is that now it needs to work for both humans and learning machines.

The future of search is intelligent and fast-moving. At PRworks, we specialize in integrated strategies that connect brand visibility with real results. Whether you’re refreshing your SEO, creating AI-ready content, or reimagining your user experience, we’re here to guide the way in the new landscape of search.

The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Central Pennsylvania Chapter has presented PRworks with three awards for projects completed in 2023-2024, bringing the firm’s number of industry awards to 18 during the past five years.

PRworks earned a Keystone Award for revitalizing a brand and website for Harvest View Barn; a Silver Keystone Award for a brand storytelling campaign for the Emily Whitehead Foundation; and a Silver Keystone Award for a strategic media relations program for AAA Central Penn. The industry awards recognize campaigns that comprised the four-step public relations process (research, planning, implementation and evaluation) and experienced measurable success.

“Each of these projects and campaigns touches lives in such meaningful ways, from raising awareness of life-saving therapies for cancer and rare diseases to finding the perfect venue to say ‘I do’ to promoting the importance of safe driving practices,” said Jason Kirsch, principal and senior counselor at PRworks. “We are so honored to receive this recognition from peers in our field. Even more so, we are so grateful to the clients who partner and collaborate with us.”

The award-winning projects included:

Something Old, Something New for a Wedding Barn Venue

Recognizing the need for a website transformation, Harvest View partnered with PRworks to revitalize its brand and create a new site to capture the hearts of prospective couples. Just three months after the website’s launch, the site began generating an average of three leads a day with a visitors-to-inquiry ratio of over 6%.
